Where passion meets expertise

Emily’s Design Style

Based in Northern Virginia and serving clients locally and virtually, I specialize in creating warm, timeless interiors that blend classic character with laid-back elegance. Whether you’re renovating a historic home in the DC metro area or furnishing a new build from afar, my designs are rooted in function, beauty, and livability. With a thoughtful approach and a deep appreciation for architectural detail, I help clients bring their vision to life.

What sets Emily James apart from other interior designers?

Unlike many interior designers who sell and mark up products, I offer design-only services—so you stay in control of what you buy and how much you spend. By removing purchasing and order management from my process, I’m able to keep my fees more affordable and focus fully on the creative side of your project. No inflated costs, no minimum spend—just thoughtful design tailored to your needs.

Emily’s Story

My background is in corporate merchandising, with 15 years at brands like Pottery Barn Kids, Williams-Sonoma, Balsam Hill, and Shutterfly. I learned how to build beautiful product stories, make smart business decisions, and create spaces that are both inspiring and functional—all of which laid the foundation for my work today.

After moving from the Bay Area to Northern Virginia and taking time away from full-time work to raise my two boys, I felt the pull to get creative again. Interior design had always been a passion, so I dipped my toe in with a small Etsy shop. Pretty quickly, I realized that many people were craving a more affordable, streamlined way to get design help—and I knew I could offer it.

That small start grew into Emily James Design: a business built on approachable, design-only services for real life. I work with clients virtually and locally across the DC Metro and Northern Virginia area, helping them make their homes feel like home—without the stress or overwhelm.

I believe good design should feel like a breath of fresh air—inviting, practical, and personal. My job is to help you make confident decisions and take the pressure off, so you can actually enjoy the process.

Emily was brilliant to work with; she was attentive, creative, open to ideas and created a space that I’m really excited about putting together!”
